Administration
- (Building subcategory) Buildings such as town halls or departmental offices which are primarily used for general office, professional, and administrative purposes.
Building
- (Category) Any building that is not a Water/Sewer building or parking structure. Any lighting or outdoor energy use at a site in the category of a building should be tied to the building. For example, lighting accounts for a school parking lot should be assigned to the school, and the school should be given a category of Building. Typical structures that should NOT be classified as a Building in the system include parking lots and parking garages (Open Space), drinking water and wastewater treatment plants and pumping substations (Water/Sewer). Cemetery
- (Open Space subcategory) Cemetery lighting and maintenance buildings.
Drinking Water Pumping
- (Water/Sewer subcategory) Pumping substations located off the site of the drinking water treatment plant on a separate electric meter that are used to deliver and distribute drinking water, either prior to or following treatment. This does not include pumping used within drinking or wastewater treatment plant processes.
Drinking Water Treatment Plant
- (Water/Sewer subcategory) A drinking water treatment plant used to prepare drinking water for public consumption. This includes all on-site outbuildings and on-site pumping used to support water treatment and initial system distribution (where the finished water pumps are located at the drinking water facility). This does not include off-site (i.e., booster) pumping used for drinking water distribution.
Elementary School
- (School type) A primary school, usually including grades 1 through 5 or 6 and often including kindergarten.
High School
- (School type) A secondary school, usually including grades 9 or 10 through 12.
Indoor Recreation
- (Building subcategory) Buildings such as senior, youth or community centers, community pools, ice arenas, and indoor sports facilities.
K-12
- (School type) A school usually including grades K through 12.
Library
- (Building subcategory) A building in which literary and artistic materials, such as books, periodicals, newspapers, pamphlets, prints, records, and tapes, are kept for reading, reference, or lending.
Middle School
- (School type) A secondary school, usually including grades 5 or 6 through 8.
Middle/High School
- (School type) A secondary school, usually including grades 5 or 6 through 12.
Open Space
- (Category) Any facility or location where the primary purpose of the facility is outdoors or in exposed space, for example parks, cemeteries and athletic fields. Accounts for parking lots, structures, and lighting that are located in or are a part of parks, cemeteries, and athletic fields should be assigned to the main facility, and the facility should be given a category of Open Space.

Other
- (Building subcategory) Buildings that do not fit clearly within any available subcategories should be designated Other. This subcategory may also be used to designate mixed-use buildings.
Outdoor Recreation
- (Open Space subcategory) Includes sports fields, stadiums, bleachers and any other buildings or lighting that are part of an outdoor recreation or athletic area.
Park
- (Open Space subcategory) Includes outdoor lighting, maintenance, and irrigation.
Parking Lots & Parking Garages
- (Open Space subcategory) Outdoor or unconditioned exposed parking structures used primarily for storing vehicles. If heated and used for additional purposes, use the category Building and the subcatgory Vehicle Maintenance Building rather than Parking Lots & Parking Garages.
Pre-K / K Center
- (School type) A primary school, usually including preschool and kindergarten.
Public Safety
- (Building subcategory) Buildings such as fire stations, police stations and dispatch centers.
Public Works
- (Building subcategory) Buildings used to support construction, engineering, roadwork, garbage or recycling, etc.

Street Light
- (Street/Traffic Lights subcategory) Outdoor lights that serve the purpose of lighting roadways and sidewalks.
Street/Traffic Lights
- (Category) Street lights and traffic signals. Does not include outdoor lighting of Buildings and Open Spaces.

- (Street/Traffic Lights subcategory) Lights that provide signaling for roadways.
Vehicle
- (Category) For tracking fuel used by vehicles, including fuel delivered to filling stations, and for use tracked via vehicular fuel accounts. This category does not include accounts for buildings used to maintain vehicles (Building) or parking lots (Open Space), or the fuel use of the building itself that serves as a filling station (Building).
Vehicle Maintenance Building
- (Building subcategory) Building for vehicle maintenance and storage. This category should not be used for fuel consumed by vehicles (use the Vehicle category), and should not be used for parking lots or parking garages (for both see the Parking Lots & Parking Garages subcategory within Open Space).
Wastewater Pumping
- (Water/Sewer subcategory) Pumping substations used to collect and return sewage to the wastewater treatment plant prior to treatment. This does not include influent pumping equipment located within the fence line of the wastewater treatment plant.
Wastewater Treatment Plant
- (Water/Sewer subcategory) A wastewater treatment plant is a facility that is designed to treat municipal wastewater. This includes all on-site outbuildings and on-site pumping used to support wastewater treatment, but does not include off-site collection system pumping used for sewage conveyance from within the municipality.
